Large Black Forest 19th Century Antler Arm Chair and Ottoman
a large and rare set of German Black Forest furniture with chair and ottoman; with oval back above a tight seat all surrounded by a robust frame symmetrically constructed of entwined fallow antlers; good sturdy construction with nice patina; suede upholstery in good condition with some fading and wear
As far back as the 15th century, antler chandeliers have been found in the castles and manors of European kings, that acted as a statement of both wealth and hunting prowess. Their natural look displayed a type of beauty that was unique from the shiny statements of gold and was designed as more than just functional products but as art pieces. Continuing into the 19th century, antler furniture started to be produced solely for the wealthy. European nobility decorated both homes and hunting cabins with antler decor. Today, pieces can be found in museums in London, Italy, and Austria. (Courtesy of www.peakantlers.com)
